Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan sign statement and protocol on settlement of armed conflict

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed a protocol and a statement on the settlement of the armed conflict on the border areas of Batken Oblast and Sughd Oblast, the press service of the Batken regional administration of the Kyrgyz Republic said.

The statement says: the commission for the settlement of the armed conflict in the border regions of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan, which happened on April 29, created at the initiative of the governments of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, discussed the causes and consequences of the incident.

As a result, came to a mutual agreement:

- end the armed conflict,

- take the personnel and military equipment to the places of permanent deployment,

- take measures to prevent the escalation of tension,

- to create a joint working group from among law enforcement officers and employees of the executive authorities of the two countries for the full implementation of the planned measures,

- to create appropriate stabilizing conditions for a fruitful negotiation process in the interests of two friendly peoples and states.

A joint statement was signed by the delegation of the Kyrgyz Republic O. Suvanaliev from the Republic of Tajikistan S. Yatimov.

Also, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan signed a protocol, which says:

On April 29, 2021, a working meeting of representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the settlement of the armed conflict was held.

The sides, based on good-neighborly relations and in pursuance of previously adopted interstate agreements, have come to a mutual agreement on the following issues:

1. To cease hostilities in the border areas of Batken Oblast and Sughd Oblast from 19.30, April 29 this year Bishkek time (from 18.30, April 29, Dushanbe time).

2. To withdraw troops and military equipment from the border areas of Batken oblast and Sughd oblast to the places of their permanent deployment.

3. Continue the negotiation process to stabilize the situation in the border areas of Batken oblast and Sughd oblast.

Create a working group from among the employees of the border troops, security and internal affairs agencies of both states to monitor the implementation of the agreements reached.

The situation in the Kyrgyz-Tajaik border has deteriorated on April 29 after the citizens of Tajikistan began to install CCTV cameras at the water intake in the village of Kok-Tash, Batken region. As a result of a joint skirmish, residents of the two countries began to throw stones at each other. Subsequently, the Tajik side began to fire at passing vehicles of citizens of Kyrgyzstan from hunting rifles.

As a result of the incident, 13 people died, 134 citizens of Kyrgyzstan were injured.
