Record turnout expected at Kyrgyzstan’s presidential elections as convict leads polls

27.11.2020

The Institute of Socio-Political Research (Moscow) conducted on its own initiative a sociological study on the electoral preferences of Kyrgyzstanis. The survey was conducted on Nov. 18-25 this year in all parts of the country including the cities of Bishkek and Osh. The total number of respondents made up 7088 people. Persons from 18 years and older were interviewed.

Responding to the question if the presidential elections were held next Sunday, would you go to the elections, 84.5% of citizens answered in the affirmative. 10.6% were not ready to vote, another 4.9% found it difficult to give an answer. Though experience of such polls shows that real turnout at elections due to various reasons turns out to be lower than forecasted, there are reasons to believe that Kyrgyzstan will set a new record by this indicator in January 2021. The leaders on wishing to vote are the Issyk-Kul, Batken and Naryn provinces. The lowest turnout is expected in Bishkek and the Chui province.

The electoral preferences of Kyrgyz people were distributed as follows. Former acting president Sadyr Zhaparov took the first place (59.11%). The second place is held by leader of Butun Kyrgyzstan party Adakhan Madumarov (3.23%), followed by former parliament speaker Kanat Isayev (0.86%). The top five also include former MP Baktybek Kalmamatov (0.28%) and activist Arstan Alai (0.26%). Former deputy Ravshan Zheenbekov potentially received 0.22% of the vote. All other candidates are supported by less than 5% of citizens in total.

21.57% of compatriots did not decide on an elected candidate or refused to answer a question from sociologists. 9.49% are going to vote against all candidates.

The survey was conducted through a telephone interview. The share of male respondents was 53%, female 47%.

Kyrgyzstan’s early presidential elections are set for Jan. 10, 2021.

A total of 47 candidates will run for the senior political position.
