Ex-President Almazbek Atambayev has been elected the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (SDPK). Such a decision was made at the SDPK congress, the headquarters of the party reported.
On the agenda, delegates considered two issues: a report on the activities of the party and the election of the party leader. As a result of the congress, Atambayev has been elected the leader of the SDPK.
It is worth noting that the party congress was held behind closed doors, without the media.
Atambayev held the post of head of state from 2011 to 2017.
The Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (SDPK) will be prepared for the parliamentary elections of 2020, party leader, ex-president Almazbek Atambayev said at a press conference on the results of the SDPK congress.
He said that the SDPK's goal is not that Atambayev become prime minister. "My task is not power. If I wanted the power, then through the referendum would amend the Constitution. But I did not do it, he said.
"I think that a good prime minister is working today. Energetic and young. He may be mistaken, but this person who is doing something. I want to prepare for the elections of 2020. There should be several parties in the country that could remain in the future for a long time," he said.
Atambayev added that the SDPK should take a share of responsibility to develop the country democratically, through parliamentary democracy.
