7 tonnes of fish found dead in Toktogul after oil spill


A massive die off of fish started in the Chychkan River, Toktogul district of Jalal-Abad region, sources told Turmush.

As of January 22, about seven tons of fish died on the fish farm in Jany-Jol village.

Head of the Toktogul district Mayorbek Satymkulov confirmed the reports and vowed measures to tackle the problem.

The driver of a Freightliner tanker truck lost control over the vehicle on the 264th kilometer of Bishkek-Osh road on January 20 and the heavy truck fell into Chychkan river, the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

One person died at the scene, two others were injured. The victims were taken to Toktogul District Hospital. The truck reportedly carried 38 tons of gasoline.

"To date, all relevant services of the district are carrying out the necessary work. The damage will be counted legally. The owner of the fuel truck is invited to the district to discuss the problem within the framework of the commission that was created to address the issue," Satymkulov said.
