President Sadyr Zhaparov signed the Law of Kyrgyzstan on Kyrgyzstan's Accession to the Convention on Assistance in the Event of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency, adopted on September 26, 1986, in Vienna.
The law was adopted by the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan on June 26, 2025.
The purpose of the law is to ensure that Kyrgyzstan complies with the domestic procedures required for the entry into force of the Convention on Assistance in the Event of a Nuclear Accident or Radiological Emergency, adopted on September 26, 1986, in Vienna (hereinafter referred to as the Convention). The law provides for Kyrgyzstan's accession to the Convention.
The purpose of the Convention is to ensure international coordination and assistance in the event of nuclear accidents or radiation emergencies. The Convention provides for the exchange of information, technical assistance, and other cooperative measures among the participating States in order to minimize the potential consequences of such accidents and protect human health and the environment.
Kyrgyzstan's accession to the Convention will strengthen the legal framework for prompt response to radiation incidents and improve the mechanisms for protecting the population and ecosystem from radiation exposure. The implementation of effective international standards in the field of radiation safety will create conditions for long-term protection of citizens' health and the environment.
In addition, participation in international cooperation under the Convention will provide the country with access to advanced technologies, training, and experience sharing. This will significantly enhance the skills of national radiation safety organisations and improve their preparedness for potential emergencies, reducing and minimizing risks. Joining the Convention will also strengthen the country's international position and fulfil its obligations in the field of radiation safety, aligning with its long-term strategic interests.
